What is the program?
The Ashby Memory Method is a brain fitness program of week-by-week memory exercises and activities
scientifically designed to improve brain fitness and function for seniors with Alzheimer’s, other
forms of dementia and memory loss.
It is personalized for the participant and can be done in the privacy and comfort of your home with
a family member or a caregiver. It takes just one hour, twice a week for clinically measurable
improvements to show in as little as eight weeks! You’ll notice the change!

What to expect if you don’t fight memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s:
Note: 25% of performance has been lost at the beginning of each blue bar.
The Philosophy:
We treat Alzheimer’s as a slowly developing brain injury that deteriorates the pathways to your memories.
Much like other forms of fitness can improve your heart and lung capacity, brain fitness rebuilds the
memory pathways in your brain and results in higher memory scores, new interest in activities of daily
living, the ability to live on your own longer, and most importantly, happier individuals enjoying a
higher quality of life!

How the Ashby Memory Method works:
The Ashby Memory Method employs personalized brain fitness exercises that stimulate all five senses
and all areas of the brain in a scientifically-proven pattern to increase functionality and brain memory.
Alzheimer’s and dementia destroy the memory pathways – not the memories – in a person’s brain, so
rebuilding new pathways results in re-establishing contact with “lost” memories. As scores on the
standard Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) improve, you’ll notice a significant leap forward in the ability
to perform activities such as maintaining hobbies, singing, being less anxious, and in general,
interacting with others in daily life.

Some Sample Exercises:
- In the sample exercise below the person is asked to read and/or take verbal directions
and then to recall previously learned semantic information and repeat it back verbally.
This stimulates several specific areas in the brain.
Actions speak louder than -
- Words
- The telephone
- A loudspeaker
- Inaction
- The next exercise presents the brain with two pieces of conflicting information and requires
the brain to discern the difference between them, separate them, and compare and choose the
correct one. This strengthens interrelationships between and among several areas of the brain.
Look at each word. Say the "color" of the word aloud, not what the letters spell -
- Now the brain is being given conflicting information of a different sort. It must examine
the information, discern how that information differs from the other information it is being
given, and select the correct answer to the question from the choices. To the brain, this
is the equivalent of flexing its muscles!

Charting the Improvement in Memory:
The following chart shows the improvement in memory recorded in field studies with 50 participants
having an average score of 20 on the standard Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), using Cognitive
Retention Therapy (Ashby Memory Method) for one year. (This is a standard exam used by most doctors
to determine your thinking score.) They recorded more than a 10% improvement in their memory
scores - outstripping any drug therapy - beginning in as little as 8 weeks and sustained for
one year. After two years, participants still reported MMSE scores higher than when they started!
Our History:
The Ashby Memory Method is based on the research of John Ashby’s late mother, Dr. Mira Ashby,
who received the Order of Canada in 1984 for her work with the brain injured. Canada’s highest
honour for lifetime achievement is awarded to Canadians who have made a recognizable difference
to the country. John Ashby took Dr. Ashby’s research and philosophy and developed a program
for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, to retrain the brain to establish new memory pathways.
